Mauthe is a fairly quiet monster that spends most of his time in caves and chasms, waiting for sheep and cattle to get lost there. He is neutral as far as monsters go, preferring quiet countrysides and never quite getting a taste for humans. However, he is best left to himself. Farmers trying to rescue their flock shouldn't bother with the caves - he's very protective of his food.
Despite being neutral and having simple desires, Mauthe is a highly intelligent creature who can shift into an anthropomorphic form (sans chest mouth) in order to speak and interact with humans. He likes to arrange deals with them. Sheep every couple of weeks for protection. And those who do make deals with him rarely regret it - his protection is invaluable, just the sight of him makes robbers and wolves go running. Non payment results in him simply leaving.

In the end, he's just a hungry creature trying to make a living.
