When Persephone was born, her mother was overjoyed to find that she had a little girl. Much to her dismay, however, Perse has turned out to be more of a tomboy than the little princess she was hoping for. Though her mother tries to get her to act more feminine, Perse would much rather be in the mud and playing her favorite game, wiffle-ball, with her friends than having tea parties with dolls.
While she attends fifth grade with a large number of other cubs, her only real friends are Ryan the otter (who she has a crush on, though she tries to hide it) and Scott the bobcat. She feels as though she gets nothing but bullied by everyone else, her mother included, for being different. Luckily, her father, a rather geeky computer systems engineer, always stands up for her and encourages her to be whatever she wants to be.
She also has Kazi, her imaginary friend, who helps to guide her through her troubles with her quirky wisdom, and her babysitter, Betsy the beaver, who is the only other person she knows who can actually see Kazi.
