Like everyone under the sun, Val's intentions in enlisting were only to be safe in Wall Sina, and perhaps move her family there, but after one day during a training session they were introduced to a member of the Scouting Legion who stayed behind in order to recruit more to join their ranks and to answer questions that those may have regarding what they do. Learning about how difficult, yet thrilling the Scouting Legion seemed to be she decided that she would serve a year as being a Stationary Guard and then applied for being transferred to the Scouting Legion. Once being afraid of facing titans, she now understands that if one must ensure their survival against these creatures, she has to be the one to make the first move.

At first glance, Val seems to be a genuine and sympathetic person. She looks out for those around her and gives useful advice, she acts like the big sister or mom of the group. She possesses a quirky and almost morbid sense of humor and has a tendency to nitpick at the smallest of things.

She takes her job seriously and sees the Military Police as a place for dogs to hide their cowardly heads, despite the fact that she wanted to join them in the first place. She will not hesitate to call someone out on their bullshit, but will be more on the back burner when it comes to punishment. When talking about the Scouting Legion she usually goes on long speeches about how good it is and how she would always champion their cause.

After Wall Rose had been sealed, she learned of her brother's death in the Trost District and was utterly heartbroken. She has a strong connection with her family, but left on a bad note between both her mother and father when mentioning that she had enlisted. It was in their plans to move the entire family safely behind Sina's walls, so that she and her brother wouldn't have to enlist. But she challenged them with the idea of her wanting a purpose.

She's killed fewer than seven titans on her own and has far more assists. She excels in agility and strategy.
