Jiri's setting is a tribal society on a harsh desert planet. His people are a little ornery by default, but Jiri is kind of an exceptional asshole. In his constant need to be the best, he's not above playing dirty, and he's a sore loser. A very sore loser. An I-will-literally-murder-you-if-you-threaten-my-job-security kind of sore loser. Needless to say, his crime doesn't go over very well with the community, and he's sent to wander the desert in exile.

Truthfully, Jiri is motivated by a deep fear of perceived weakness and embarassment. He's gay, which is a huge taboo among his people, and on top of that his taste in men is... questionable. Getting married to a young woman he can't stand just to keep up appearances does nothing to improve his demeanor.

He does eventually become a bit less of a horrible jerk... but it's too little too late.
