Shi'Zayla, better known as Vertigo, is the mother of Ashlynn, her twin brother, Tenebrous, and their much younger sister, Kindle.

She's a shaman from a now, extinct tribe that lived within the middle of Africa; and rumored to be a sorceress dealing with the arts of dark and mind magic. Her people lived within their territory for hundreds of years until the dragons destroyed their land, killed most of the men, and enslaved the surviving women and children for labor and..other practices.

The reason behind this is that the dragons wanted the precious gemstones that were buried underneath the land they built their homes upon.

Vertigo was a little girl when both of her parents were killed in front of her, and her older sister. She was then taken to the floating city of dragons, and given as a servant girl to a mixed Vietnamese, and European family..whilst her sister was sold as a concubine to a neighboring family.

For a few years, she was able to meet with her sister in secret, and continue practicing the dark magic she had inherited from her mother. Unfortunately, the two were discovered. As dragons are highly sensitive, and quite possibly vulnerable to magic, it was a serious crime to practice magic without authorization from the high council.

Vertigo and her sister were publicly humiliated at a community gathering, and then flogged. Sadly, her older sister's master was less than forgiving, and promptly pushed her off of the edge of the runway leading into the city, where she fell to her death.

Vertigo was shown mercy by the family that she served, but was confined to her quarters under strict watch for quite some time unless she was needed by the family. When she became an adolescent, it was then one of the members of the family took an interest in her after taking pity upon her and her situation of being a slave. The eldest son, Shenron, coaxed her out of her shell eventually within due time. He had always been kind to her since she was a little girl.

The two became friends, and enjoyed each other's company well into her adulthood. Shenron confided to her that he's always been ashamed of his people acting the way that they do, and was pained to see Vertigo go through the harsh treatment she had to put up with. Wishing that he could undo what she has endured thus far, she only smiled at him, and told him that he and her sister helped make it through the hard times.

Love blossomed between the two unexpectedly, but they kept their relationship a secret from his family. Not long after that, Shenron's father announced that he was to become betrothed to his first cousin on his mother side, to ensure racial purity is preserved. Due to his love for Vertigo, he outright refused the betrothal, resulting in being excommunicated from the dragon society. He was allowed to leave with a large portion of his inheritance however, due to the fact that he was his father's favored son (Shenron's younger brother, Porunga, fell out of favor with his father when he found out that he was gay, and as such, was excommunicated from their society as well).

Shenron also insisted that Vertigo to be allowed to leave with him, in which his father questioned as to why he wanted the family's servant. It is revealed that one of their romantic liaisons has caused her to become pregnant with his children. Thoroughly disgusted, Shenron's father disowned him, but allowed Vertigo to leave with him, as he didn't want his mongrel grandchildren desecrating his family's home with their impurity. The two eventually married, and settled upon a large mass of land that Shenron had bought with some of his inheritance, and built their home to where they would spend the rest of their days. Eventually, Vertigo gives birth to her first children, boy and girl twins.
