Emerging almost immediately after a great theomachy several centuries ago, the Ferrymen are a congregation that oversee the passage of the dead into the afterlife following the death and disappearance of the two gods. Ubiquitous, their true appearances are seen only by the dead and the dying.

The Ferrymen themselves are not born as spirits or demigods, but as normal people who are offerred special privileges in exchange for a lifetime (or eternity, if the ferryman so desires) of servitude.

Resolute, taciturn, and having a poor understanding of the gravitas of death, Red is a prodigy amongst Ferrymen, and is quickly assigned to handle the casualties surrounding an obstinate plague outbreak almost entirely by herself. After time, however, it becomes apparent that the outbreak is one of several epidemics indirectly caused by the Ferrymen’s activity and imperfect performance. She quickly bands together with a trio who are determined to bring about the return of a dead god.

Red finds strong opposition in the form of another Ferryman, who believes that if she were to succeed, she would rob her fellow psychopomps of any purpose and possibly their lives.
