Hoot is a Barn Owl, she is just your average Barn Owl in many ways except she has oddly glowing blue orbs for eyes instead of the standard black eyes.

She's quiet, strong and a determined soul who will protect those that need it.

In the Ga'Hoole fandom she is a Navigator who seems to be able to do it with her eyes shut as if he's just feeling the world around her.
No one knows where she's from, she appeared at the Great Tree as a flightless fledgling, it's unknown who dropped her there or why.
Many owls speculate she was a gift from the stars to help save the Great Tree and the owls of Ga'Hoole.
