Quetzal is the offspring of a Skywatcher human female and a pure blood dragon (in accordance with legends of the Skywatcher tribe). He was taught the ways of the tribe from his mother who was taken away by authorities for refusing to pay taxes on her land. Quetzal protected the land for years until the tribe could acquire the land to rebuild its tribal nation.

Years later, Quetzal took a human mate and had a child which was killed by religious fanatics belonging to the Puritan sect who believe human hybrids are demons and must be destroyed. Over the years the sect merged with government to drive the tribe from its lands to a secret location where they advanced in technology and started colonizing the other worlds in the solar system, welcoming those who wanted to be hybrids.

22 years later, the Puritans followed them into space trying to exterminate them, but Quetzal, commanding the battleship; Phoenix defeated the Puritan holy fleet and blockaded Earth. Unfortunately the Puritins tried to use anti-matter missiles to take out the battle fleet in orbit and wound up destroying everything on the Earth. Random Puritans raid hybrid colonies for resources and the Phoenix, under Quetzal and his mate; Draxa, fight the raiders and bring aboard orphans.
