The most familiar application of bismuth is probably bismuth subsalicylate – Pepto-Bismol and so on. Lyra Heartstrings was chosen for this element because the compound treats heartburn, diarrhoea (which she might get by sitting as a human for too long) and other stomach-related conditions.
