Here's the first of a multi-part commission series for zealstarclaw, partially inspired by the super cute romantic drama webcomic "The Angel in the Forest".

"Birdsong" takes place in a post-apocalyptic world almost entirely overtaken by rampant plantlife, with trees dominating the remains of cities and thick grasslands and marshes covering most of the surround areas. I thought that this would be a really fun environment to do a story like this in as opposed to the much more common dry, dead wasteland type of post-apoc world - and it also means I'd have to come up with some unique challenges for the environment, since the big draw of those other worlds is that food and water are scarce.

In this city, both of these are quite abundant if you know where to look - and if you know when it's safe to go out. Here we're following in on a lone opossum survivor making his way through the lower streets of the city to find some food for himself... until, of course, everything goes south.

Another survivor saves him from a pack of wild wolves, though not unscathed... and it seems he's gone from one danger to another, as his savior just so happens to be a predator species. This is the kind of world where you can't really trust anyone other than yourself, and then with predator species being known to hunt prey species and eat them as a faster, easier food source...
