A little more on Howard the Duck: it cost 38 million to make, and only pulled in 37 million at the box office.

I suspect that it's been profitable by now- it doesn't take much to pull in a million dollars over 30 years- but it was SO CLOSE to breaking even, I have to wonder what the major flaws were in this film that prevented it from breaking the 38 million mark. Was it just too expensive to make for the size of the audience? Was it the story? (I mean, compared to the Avengers, an ordinary duck/man fighting the Dark Overlords from Outer Space REALLY doesn't seem terribly far-fetched anymore. If this were made today, I could totally see audiences gobbling "Howard the Duck" up as part of the build-up to fighting Thanos.)

Or was it duck tits? Nah, can't be duck tits. People needed to see duck tits.

... well, maybe Lucas needed to see duck tits. I mean, hey, I'm not one to judge; I don't think any of us are, if we're going to be REAL honest with ourselves here. But maybe, with all the cocaine flying around in the 80s and the constant threat of yuppies and nuclear annihilation, maybe we as a people were just too busy to see duck tits.

Or maybe duck tits were so bizarre, it made us stop and really look at ourselves. Made us examine what we were doing with our lives. Made us stop and really consider things that collectively, we took for granted -like our reality, what we're doing with our lives, whether our existence is worth it. Made us gaze into the abyss of our own mortality.

Maybe that's what people were uncomfortable with. Maybe if the movie hadn't made us question our role in the universe, it could have cleared that extra million. I mean, the Matrix did that ten years later. Howard the Duck was just too far ahead of it's time.

How much of this Howard the Duck spiel comedy and how much is serious?

Considering this comes on the heels of him making us watch Howard the Duck in stream, I'm afraid it's all serious.
