It was while Guiseppe Verdi was working on Un giorno di regno, his second opera, that his wife died. The first performance was a resounding failure; Verdi was seated in the orchestra pit during the show and thus heard the audience reaction directly. Afterwards, Verdi changed jobs and vowed to never compose again.

Verdi's third opera, Nabuccodonosor (later Nabucco), established Verdi's reputation as a composer. He was quoted as sying, "And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain thatNabucco was born under a lucky star".
