I have to say.. I think the starters in X and Y are based off of role-playing typed classes.
You have Fennekin as the final form being a magic-based "class", much like a sorcerer, or mage, or something. Then you have Freakie when evolved turning into a stealth/speed based "class", luke a ninja, rogue, thief, or something similar. Then you have chespin, who when evolved, gets a big armored shell thing like a tank-based "class, like a warrior, paladin, or some defender.
At least, that's what I always thought when I saw their evolved forms.
Anyway, I like this shiny. Also, did you know, it also looks bad-ass when you have him with white skin and a dark-grey belly? It's so cool. (I had the layer with the base skin invisible, and that's how I saw it)
