"Remnants, as they are called, were the gods first attempts to create physical beings in order to interact within the world of mortals. The gods deemed them as 'failures' due to their absence of morality. Eventually a portion of their essence was used in the creation of the Overseers.
However the strength of the gods had waned over time...and would eventually be seized and absorbed by the beings they had discarded, resulting in a new era of chaotic deities.
