Vaeu, along with many other species living on the world, Yaphenna, are capable of changing sex. Before their uplifting, vaeu would have done this automatically, once triggered by special pheromones released by other members of their herd. In modern times, vaeu take regular doses of a pheromone blocker so they can choose when and how to transition. They can even choose to halt the transition halfway between male and female, as depicted here. Neutral vaeu have no horns, and do not have any reproductive organs.
