Big Dergy Tail - Red WIP by Volt Siano

Big Dergy Tail - Red WIP

Volt Siano

Working on another suit with a local friend of his Wyvern character. First thing we've finished is the tail you see here. It nearly reaches the floor when he wears it, and has a thick base that called for my first use of a kidney belt.
Fleece is... interesting to work with. It doesn't hide seams like fur does, and any lumps in the foam/polyfill beneath are ten times more noticeable than with fur. Neither is it any great substitute for scales, which, sadly, I am neither experienced enough nor ambitious enough to attempt working with. We'll try experimenting with different materials that may allow us to paint or sew in a few scale shapes here and there (definitely not all over) so that things hopefully won't appear so flat.
Suit being made for Red.

Disclaimer: I've never tried to build a suit or parts for one before.

You can get plastic netting that has diamond-shaped holes. It's normally put over machine parts like metal shafts, tubes, and pipes, so the surface doesn't get beat up when you ship or store the parts. Sometimes you see it on glass bottles that are getting shipped, as well. But I wonder if you put a sleeve of it around the tail, maybe the diamond openings would be enough like scales to look good.

This is the kind of thing I am thinking of: https://www.caplugs.com/sleeve-web-netting-sw https://www.uline.com/BL_3753/Protective-Netting?keywords=netting

Problems: It would probably be an "all over" thing, which you may not want. I don't know how well it would do on the taper of the tail - you might need a few different sizes to cover the whole tail, and I'm not sure how you'd do the seams between the sizes. It might also end up looking like the tail has a fishnet stocking on it for unexplained reasons. :) You would probably want a red color, and that's not available in all the sizes. It is kind of expensive; in the larger sizes, a single 40 foot roll from Caplugs costs about $100 +/-. (Caplugs will probably make whatever color you want in whatever size you want, but only if you order thousands of feet of it.)

I don't work for either company; I've just used their products before.

Hm. I probably wouldn't want to use it as an overlay, since we want the scale-shapes be higher than the spaces between them, but it might work well as a stencil. Thanks for the idea!
