Stovak'nara ("New Horizon") class Anchorship

victor-933

For centuries, Hadeankind has used Microspace to bypass the travel limitations of normal space, despite still understanding very little of this peculiar "sub-dimension". What is known, however, is that objects that are inserted from Normal Space into Microspace seem to travel exponentially farther in relation to their position in Normal Space, to the effect that if one traveled a few miles through Microspace, then emerged back into Normal Space, they would find themselves several hundred million miles away from their starting point.

The gateways that both insert objects into, and retrieve them from, Microspace are immense structures known as Anchorpoints. Every planet in the Hadean Federation has its own Anchorpoint, which serves as the very heart of every world. Every aspect of both material commerce and communication destined for neighboring worlds or parts unknown passes through the Anchorpoint in one form or another.

The problem with this miraculous technology, however, is the mind-bogglingly enormous amounts of energy required to operate it. Planetary Anchorpoints that service entire worlds are themselves self-contained cities producing (and consuming) a full quarter of the entire world's power output. Because such colossal infrastructure is required, it takes decades for a newly-colonized world to establish a functional Anchorpoint. Furthermore, Anchorpoints must exist at both the origin and destination of a journey for it to be completed.

These limitations present a massive obstacle to continued Hadean expansion, as well as emergency military response to hostile incursions such as during the devastating Extinction War. The answer to these issues comes in the form of the Stovak'nara class of Anchorship, a new innovation that places a relatively low-capacity Anchorpoint on a starship, creating a mobile Anchorpoint.

The Stovak'nara is enormous, nearing the displacement of a Sa'Drujj-class Battlecruiser. Almost the entire ship is devoted to power generation to feed the ever-gluttonous Anchorpoint clutched in its ventral structure. The Anchorpoint's draw is so great, in fact, that the Stovak'nara is left almost completely defenseless, save for limited asteroid defense and a handful of light anti-fighter guns. Its strength, however, is that it can travel far beyond the Outer Reach to explore new worlds in mere minutes, rather than years. In addition, its function as an Anchorpoint allows a significant military detachment to almost instantaneously follow it to its destination, allowing for true rapid deployment of defense forces.

These invaluable ships are still quite uncommon, however, because of the enormous costs in material and labor required. For the time and resources consumed to construct a single Anchorship, one could instead complete nearly three Sa'Drujj Battlecruisers.
