Mortmercaton devours souls. Not sure if I will depict them as orbs of light as seen here. This was more practice than anything. Very messy but expressive at least. Was attempting a pen and oil pastel look in this illustration.

Thank you! I like your idea of them being birds. I might sketch out that route. Don't tell, but Mortmer has a tendency to "plant" them and grow little trees that harbor the souls in its fruit. I plan on depicting that at some point. I just need some idea of what are typical ways souls might appear in this story before he alters them for "storage."

I know souls are often associated with small animals when they're not floating orbs. Let's see, butterflies, fireflies, moths are associated with death in some cultures, and the birds I've mentioned were used in ancient Egyptian religion (though the birds would retain their human faces, think of that one pokemon, while I was picturing regular birds).
Really any small flying animal could work. I could see them being flies too.

When you mentioned depicting souls differently, for some reason the first thing that came to mind was showing them as birds. And him biting the heads off of them to 'devour souls'. ... yeah
This might be old, but the lighting is still neat and I like the hands. I just like when hands are drawn with some depth.
