Painting Nails

Veldor

Giran was sitting in the library, he was writing notes from multiple books about bird wyvern care which were laid open in front of him. 'My First Monstie', 'Velocidromes and You', 'The Guide for All Bird Wyverns' were just a few of the different titles. After flipping franticly through one of the books, Giran strikes through his last scribbled words in frustration and places his pen down with a loud sigh. The books did have the information he was searching for, but it seems that the authors did not agree on the topic he was currently researching. And he does not know enough about the different authors to know which one is the most knowledgeable or trustworthy.

‘TAP, TAP, TAP’ it sounded behind him. He turned around to see a blue shadow turning around the corner. Running up to sniff at one shelf full of scrolls, before turning around and ducking under a table full off maps, only to sprint off from underneath it to the next thing that caught his attention. ‘TAP, TAP, TAP’ the claws of the young Velocidrome sounded while Verim was running around the library.

This distractive sound was the reason why Giran was in the library right now. Since today, Verim his claws started to make more sound than usual while he was running around on wood or tiles. Giran had heard that wild palamutes their nails wear down because of their great travel distances, while palamutes that are used as companion animals need to have their nails trimmed because they don’t walk as much as their wild counterparts. He was hoping to find advice on this subject when it came to Velocidromes, and while he did manage to get more information on the question, a definitive answer was still out of reach. One writer says that it is absolutely forbidden to trim the nails of a Velocidrome, while another says that it is an absolute must.

“Hmmm….”, Giran murmured deep in thought “If information from others proves to be insufficient, or inconsistent, it is best to conduct your own research and add it to the pile.” Quoting his teacher and father. “Or I could ask the librarian about the authors” he thought while looking sideways towards the desk the librarian was sitting at. The person was almost hidden behind the huge wall off paper stacked in front of her. Only her hat could be seen and sometimes the hand that would reach for the tea next to her. “She seems to be busy, I would rather not interrupt her if it is not necessary. I will first try to gather some data for myself, and if I can’t come to a conclusion I will come back and ask her.” Giran concluded. “But how am I going to measure the growth of the nails? If I measure the nails each day or week and compare their lengths, I will know how much their length has changed overall, but I won’t be able to figure out how much has grown and how much has worn off. And I am kind of curious about that.”

Giran placed the pen at his lips and started thinking. “I think I might have an idea, I only hope that Verim will like it.” He started to pack his belongings that were spread across the desk along with a few of the books that he was using. He stacked all the other books ontop of each other and began to return them to their correct place. “tap, tap, tap, TAP, TAP, TAP” Having noticed that Giran was on the move, Verim immediately sprinted towards his friend and began to follow him. He watched curiously while Giran was placing the books back in the different shelves. Once done, Giran kneeled in front of the young Velocidrome. “Are you ready to go? We are going to do some shopping.” “Of course I am ready, I have already seen every nook and cranny of this dusty building while you were just sitting there.” thought Verim. He let out a loud honk as answer. “Great, lets go then” said Giran with a smile, putting on his helmet while walking towards the front door with the Velocidrome right on his heels. Opening the doors, the two entered Setano Village for their shopping needs.

After visiting multiple shops and having purchased all their supplies for the week, the two arrived at a small field of grass near the stables. Once there Giran pulled out a small box that he bought and started lining up the contents in a line in front of Verim. Verim looked at the small different glass bottles that were lined up in front of him, and then back at Giras. “Go on then” Giras said while removing his armour now that he wasn’t in the middle of Setano village anymore, “pick the one you like the most.” Verim started to sniff at the first few bottles. They all smell the same, so no reason to pick one based on scent. The shape and size off the all the bottles is the same too. So the only decision to make is based on colour, the small Velocidrome concluded. Verim placed his head on the ground to get a good view of each bottle. “There is one that is red, like my beautiful crest. One that is the same orange as the eyes I see when I look in the lake. One that is blue like me. A green one like the grass field we are in right now. And there is a yellow one, and a pink one, and a silver one, and a white one.” But it was the last one that got his attention. The content of this bottle was purple, a colour that Verim has not often seen before. He picked it up with his beak and sprinted back towards Giran who was just done removing his armour.

“Have you picked one out?” Giran asked. A muffled honk came as answer from Verim. Verim placed the bottle in front of Giran who was sitting with his legs crossed in front of him. Giran picked up the bottle and unscrewed the cap. Verim took place between Giran’s legs and curiously watched while Giran dipped a small brush in the bottle. Giran then took Verim’s claw and carefully started to paint the nails of the Velocidrome with the purple nail polish. Once done Verim looked curiously at his painted nails. “Do you like it?” Giran asked. An excited honk came from Verim who already placed his other claw in Giran’s hand to be painted. “Good” Giran replied. “Lets paint your other three claws too then.”
