Also I agree -- as soon as I saw the western saddle in Dragon Age it snapped me out of the world and felt "wrong". Nothing in any of the other designs -- except, er, maybe the Inquisitor's Hat -- felt like that would lend itself to a western style, and so it felt so sudden and out of place. And as you mentioned with the roping, their style of animal husbandry didn't seem to lend itself to the saddle either (complicated commentary on hillside animals and the use of herding dogs on rocky hillsides versus open-plain management of cattle by horseback blah blah).

Very old saddles (like Roman times once they started riding with saddles) did not have stirrups at all, they just had... horns sticking out of the cantle and pommel that you used to grip with your legs (sort of like how a sidesaddle saddle works) and that was how you stayed on. And then medieval saddles had very high cantles and pommels and some had raised seats. There are some interesting notes here: http://www.thejoustinglife.com/2014/03/re-creating-medieval-and-renaissance.html

Just geeky stuff saddle stuff. Haha. I personally have an endurance saddle, English all-purpose, and dressage saddle; I borrow western saddles (plethora of them available, the stable is a riding therapy stable).

I like your designs much better than the DA ones. :| And this is marvelous art. petpets without getting fingers bitten off

LOL, yeah! the western saddle was such a bizarre choice -- I'm not sure that I feel an english saddle would have exactly fit, either, but it doesn't make me have thoughts like "NO INQUISITOR DON'T ROPE PHOENIXES THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA"
(man also how much animal farming is the inquisition doing? it's not a bad idea, exactly, but Skyhold isn't terrible farming-friendly. I assume they trade out military favours/herbs in exchange for stuff like mutton and beef, otherwise most of Skyhold's meat is probably chicken and nug)

thanks for the link! some of those saddles look oddly kind of... comfortable. hmmm.

my father used to build his own saddles and tack (he outsourced the trees, though), and he focused on western saddles and endurance (particularly McClellan) -- so that's what I'm most familiar with, but I did trail rides and barrel races back when my family still had horses! I'm admittedly pretty lost when it comes to dressage and English styles, it's more of a 'admire from afar' thing for me. XD

also, thank you!! I kind of wish I knew enough about modeling to try and edit the DA models (honestly probably just as well I don't, I really don't need more over-ambitious projects in my life, haha.)
against all better judgment though I really want a pet dracolisk. I can keep it on the lawn. what could possibly go wrong
