Spyro - Gnasty Gnorc the Dragonslayer by Turquoisephoenix

Spyro - Gnasty Gnorc the Dragonslayer

Turquoisephoenix

At last we reach the end of my Spyro 1 Redesign series. It took almost two years but I feel the results are totally worth it.

And here we have head honcho himself, Gnasty Gnorc. With his design, I really didn't change much but I did ignore pretty much everything that was in the actual Spyro 1 model in favor of using the design that was actually in the promotional material with some details from the AHT model. I feel like the weird blocky golden armor was only really used because Gnasty's actual design was too difficult to render in PS1 graphics without it looking like a pixellated mess.

All things considered, I kinda like the design of the Gnasty Gnorc level...or at least the first part of it where you're in that dome and he's firing missiles at you. If only they had just made that an actual boss arena where you fight Gnasty instead of adding a bunch of race tracks and keys, because talk about embarrassing, just running from the baby purple dragon...

Gnasty Gnorc

In Gnasty Gnorc's mind, he and his fellow gnorcs are fighting back against a fire-breathing scourge that has enslaved the realms and made them their own, and he offered his hand to the humans, to the rebellious Fools, and to anyone else disgruntled by the giant flying lizards in order to accomplish this noble task. Those dragons think they're better than the gnorcs, so "ugly" and "stupid", as they sit on their hoards of gems and bask in the sunshine of the Artisan realms.

Yes, Gnasty Gnorc believes himself to be the noble hero in this story, the heroic dragon slayer ready to drive back the scaly forces of evil.

That's also why he doesn't really work well with Ripto and they never really tried to actually conquer the realms together. Ripto just wants to conquer the world and become Emperor Ripto, ruler of Riptonia and the Riptocs. Gnasty just wants those nasty reptiles to just go away so that his people can live in peace, and if he has to freeze all their Elders in statues and send his troops to weed out any rebellious dragons that won't relinquish their land in his favor, well, that's no skin off his nose...

Also, when Gnasty was banished to the junkyard of the Dragon Realms, he received one of the Dragon Elders as his jailer. Gnasty responded by bashing him in the head and using his bones in his armor. The dragons stopped sending in people to survey the junkyard after that...

As a side note, it was later revealed that Red, one of the Dragon Elders, had used this gnorc uprising as a means for cruel experimentation and may have supplied Gnasty with some of his "findings" (especially in the Beast Maker's realm, where he had somehow transformed one of Gnasty's top lieutenants into a robot) in exchange for immunity from the spell. This was enough to make the other Dragon Elders strip him of his title and banish him.
But that's a story for another day...

I just want to say, thank you to everyone who supported me while I drew all these bosses. Every last comment, every last discussion on theories and world-building, every last fave all really helped me want to finish this, and I'm really thankful for everyone who was along for the ride. Thank you, everyone! I had a blast doing these!
