How to: Otter

Trix Master

This is more of a kind of rant-ish art while trying to make my rant a little helpful to others.

See I keep seeing the highest of quality, the peak of digital art, only to look in the tags of said art to say "Otter" when really the character featured in it looks vastly different than an otter. Best examples I saw were:
-A Sonic styled character that had all the features of a hedgehog, but with a tail of some kind
-Literally a anthro wolf with a kangaroo tail
-And a horned kangaroo looking fella claiming to either being a Otter or a Ferret (despite the pouch showing)

Which honestly really pains me because with a good portion and the artist's style and clear amount of experience, you'd think they would actually use a reference of what animal they are drawing instead of making these chimeras of confusion.

Also disclaimer this doesn't mean you can't do creative digit-grade legged otters, you can. Just keep the general anatomy bits like the face, webbed hands, body, tail, ears, stuff in mind while you make your otter (though go nuts if the otter is a mix of something else).

Dear Artists, if you are commissioned/requested/or just have the urge to draw a Otter. Please for the love of anything, look up a reference. Same literally goes for everything. It would be a lot less painful for both you and who you're commissioner. Also don't stop drawing. Thank you.

Thanks! This'll be a handy reference for whenever I draw an otter character.

You're welcome! Though I would also grab some irl photos of what species of otter you're aiming for as well. Because some species have really large characteristic changes, like the Sea Otter and the Giant River otter just to name a few.

Just ya know did generally the most common otter for this.
