(1998) Jaiden by Tremaine

(1998) Jaiden

Tremaine

Drawn in 1998. Jaiden was actually supposed to be a black house cat. For whatever reason, I interpreted his description as a black panther. I recall feeling incredibly self-conscious about not catching this.

Pro-Tip: artists, if you're not sure about how a character should look, it's absolutely OK to show your progress to your commissioner/requester/recipient! I recall being incredibly self-conscious of my sketch work. It is a sketch. It's not supposed to look finished!

Pro-Tip #2: When offering feedback on a sketch, it's good to start positive! ""I appreciate all the effort you put into this! I want to help your art be the best it can be. While the black panther looks cool, he's supposed to be a house cat!"" (At the time, it was incredibly hard for me take criticism, but the march of time has taught me that getting it right in the first place ultimately leads to greater satisfaction on both the artist's AND client/recipient's behalf!)

Pro-Tip #3: It's OK if people mess up. In life, it's inevitable! A truly useful life skill is letting mistakes roll off of you after you've learned all you can from them, and learning to not let it stop you from moving forward.
