Fantasia on Red Sky by Tonya

Fantasia on Red Sky

Fantasia on Red Sky

Tonya

Me on the piano. This is all based on a tune from out here in the Northeast called "Red Sky". Most Native people from out this way in the New England area are familiar with the song, so the tune is easily recognizable when heard in this version. I also played this at the Rhode Island Indian Council in front of several Native leaders. It was a great honor. I recorded this using 5 microphones. Enjoy!

The original tune can be heard here: https://www.weasyl.com/submission/912825

I really like it! What sort of instruments would Red Sky have originally been played on? Did you translate it to a Piano track yourself?

Funny you should ask. Later today I'm going to upload it in its original form! :) and yes I transposed it to piano myself! Thanks so much for the listen <3

    Really sensible. :)
May I ask what sort of scales are present in native indian music? Is it influenced by common practice music in any way?

It depends on what region of the US/Canada or the Americas you're talking. A lot is in what I like to call a "modified pentatonic" scale. Others in simple 4 note scales or simple pentatonic. Thanks for the listen. <3
