I like this kind of thing…you don't see it very often: cheery-looking toony characters in melancholy (or otherwise non-silly :P) situations.

I agree, though in my case it's perhaps more that I find the juxtaposition of the cheery, happy character design with the dreary mood fascinating...not that I'm trying to trivialize your feelings or anything. (3
