I've been meaning to post this for a little while, but have only just got around to it. This originally started as an idea that came to me after messing my ankle up playing football a few months ago... I'm not sure what bothers me more - the fact it took me a few months to fully finish it, or that it all started from me injuring myself!

Anyhow - this is a short story about two brothers, set in Jevin's WDHBM universe that features mysterious, size-shifting 'cloakers'. (P.S: If you haven't read any of the stories in his series, they come highly recommended, particularly his latest piece 'Treading'

I hope you enjoy! Also - if the small sections of American Football commentary seem a little off, pretend the announcer was an unknowledgable Brit covering his first, and last, game before being swiftly deported ;)

    hello!

hmm, so this is one of the 'other works' you mentioned?

you're from Britain / the UK, right?
I'm from Australia, but I'm sorry to say that I can't provide any help for the commentary, and not just because I'm not American.
it's because my knowledge of sports is an empty void.
seriously, I know nothing about football other than that you're supposed to kick the 'ball' (which when you think about it, it can't really be called that, as it's not a sphere) through the big post-thingies. and then something else happens but I don't know what.

and don't bother asking about the "AFL" or the game "Rugby" because I know even less about them... but I'm pretty sure rugby's just a more violent version of football.
some Australian I am, huh? I fit none of the stereotypes we get overseas.

so, again, sorry for my lack of knowledge.
this looks like an interesting read, though.

(sorry, I didn't mean to rant.)

      Hey :)

Well, in a sense it is - though this is my latest story, written -after- i'd finished "Against All Odds". I've some more older stories on FA/SoFurry that I've not got round to posting up on here.

I am indeed from the UK :) From what I've been told, the commentary isn't terribad, so I'm happy with that :P I know more about Soccer and Rugby since I've played those, my exposure to both American and Aussie Rules football is pretty limited I must say, with the exception of the 5 minutes I've watched them on TV here and there :P

I suppose you're not the stereotypical Aussie, but then you could say the same for me and British stereotypes: I don't really like tea, don't particularly give a damn about the royal family (just like 95% of Brits) and have an Estuary English accent as opposed to the 'posh' one you usually see in movies etc. :P

Don't worry about it - hope you enjoy(ed) the story! ^^

P.S I still need to take a look at yours at some point!

        okay then.

I really enjoy 'talking' with you, nice to have a little intelligent conversation. :)

I'm still in high school, and, unfortunately, I'm one of only a handful in my year level who's actually mature in action unlike 99% of year elevens :|
but, along with my group of friends here in Australia, it's kind of cool to 'talk' with someone overseas!

personally, I think stereotypes are a bit dumb, but you get that kind of thing everywhere I guess.

        I think you're cool :)

also, yes, this story was pretty good... not as good as AAO is to be honest, but I couldn't help but find myself re-reading it three times in one day :)

personally, I think if I was somehow turned into a micro (in theory), I think that the 'game' depicted here would actually be pretty fun... as long as the other player wasn't too rough, obviously.

by the way, if you have any questions about Australia, go ahead and feel free to ask me, I won't mind, I'm actually curious to how much people overseas know about my country :P

and I understand if you have not yet read my story, you have your own life, obviously...
but hurry if you can, a little "challenge" in one of the latest chapters has a deadline of next Wednesday (aug 6th)
and the prize to the winner is a cameo in the story!!
since nobody answered the first challenge, I felt a bit sad, but I'd be very happy if some people tried the current one! (hint hint)

anyway, the interaction between warren and kurt really seems like legitimate brotherly conduct, so, well done!
I look forward to reading your future submissions, if there are any.

by the way... do you know the time difference between Australia and the UK? because I don't... just wondering.

          • Link

Good to know you liked this story! It was written as a little two-week piece, so while I still worked to do it well, I don't think I expected to be quite the same quality as AAO :)

I can totally see little games like that being fun! But yeah, i think Kurt went a little too far in terms of rough treatment!

I'll be sure to poke you with questions about Australia as they come ^^ likewise, feel free to ask about the UK :P

I'm gonna try to make a start this weekend! lately, I've been tied up a lot with work and a couple other things that have limited my free time unfortunately. I'll try my best to meet the deadline! ^^

Oh, there'll be more story submission from me in the future, that's for certain!

looks it up The time difference is 9 hours between here and where you are in Australia, so as I'm typing this, it's 8.50pm Saturday here and 5.50am Sunday there :P

        • Link

Aww, thank you - you seem pretty cool yourself! :) And yes, it's real nice to have friends overseas to chat with :D

          • Link

I sent you a message asking if you wanted to be 'friends' on here, but it mustn't have gone through...
            so, want to be friends?

            • Link

              Oh, I didn't receive it?

              I'll send an invite~

just checked your furaffinity page, when will "trading places" go up here, if it will at all?
    just wondering.
by the way, who made the previous pic you used for your icon, the one with you holding a ball and a book?
is that one of your own?

    • Link

kinda wish I could read it there, but i can't register onto that site.
also, I wish I could view those pics you have there, too... but alas "registered users only"

I can't register there, because I've had some annoying experiences with a similar site, which I'd rather not go into.
this site seemed 'safer' so I was fine about registering here, but something about that site is...
how do I put it without being offensive... umm... offputting?
y'know, 'cause not all the stuff on that site fits into the 'want to see' pile.
plus, I don't feel like registering just so I can view one user's stuff, bit of a waste.

      ah well.
hope you feel like posting your other stories here sometime soon.

      • Link

yeah, i get what you mean in terms of FA. Most of my readership comes from SoFurry - have you checked that site out? It's definitely the site where stories are most popular, in my experience at least.

Still, i'll get the rest of my work up here soon ^^

haven't tried sofurry, but I have a feeling it might be blocked (I usually use my school's Wifi, saves me spending a fortune on my broadband :3)
i'll try and look when I have time.

          • Link

            just tried, not blocked.
damn, there's a lot of stuff on your page on there...
might try and read some when I can find time.
oh, btw: you had time to read more of my story?
            there're only 13-or-so chapters left.
            not nagging you, just asking.

            • Link

yay :) yeah, i've got a few more stories over there. Check them out whenever you get time - they're not going anywhere :)

I haven't read any more just yet, i'm sorry to say. Just got back from a weekend away, hence my silence for the last few days, but I will read more soon :)

              • Link

                ah, okay.
if I may ask, where'd you go to?

    • Link

I keep meaning to do it! I have that story, along with a couple of others. I've just not got round to doing the 'leg work' so to speak to post them here.

The other pic is from a fur here in the UK called 'StrayJim'. It's from a conbadge I commissioned from him :3

      • Link

        fair enough.

BTW: what do you think of my new icon?
I was quite pleased with how it turned out.

        • Link

I think it's nice! ^^ definitely -much- better than anything i could ever hope to produce hehe :)

          • Link

I'm sure you're better than you give yourself credit for.

            • Link

seriously, I doubt you're really as bad as you claim to be :)
I'd like to see some stuff you've drawn, if it's okay with you, that is.

              • Link

I would do, but truthfully, I've never really drawn anything - i've just stuck to writing :)

Like anything else, I'm sure if I practiced I'd get better. I've just never really had the motivation to do it.

                • Link

                  fair 'nuff.

                  • Link

I used to be unable to draw hands or faces, but, with practise, and a reference, I mastered it :)

but, no matter how much I write, I know i'll never reach your level of skill!

                    • Link

Aw, now that's not true :) writing just involves practice, too! That and reading other people's works to get a feel for how they do things differently. Everything's a learning process~

                      • Link

jeez tirrell, can't you just take a compliment when one is given? :D

although, I do see your point, I suppose.

BTW: is it true that what we know as "soccer" is called "football" over where you are?
'cause, I actually think soccer has more right to be called 'football' than "football" does, after all, the egg-shaped thing can't really be a ball if it isn't a sphere, can it?
                        lol, logic :D

                        • Link

I can and i'm very grateful for your praise, but i'm still adamant you can, as you put it, reach my level of skill :3

And yes, 'football' here is what you call 'soccer'. I suppose it's a little odd to call a game with a non-spherical ball 'football', but then I can't claim to be an authority on that :P

Anyway - the word soccer was first used by us Brits anyhow (it's a shortened term for AsSOCiation Football), so we only have ourselves to blame ;)

                          • Link

oh, I get it now. thanks for the info.
btw: I was trying to compliment you, I'm really not very good at writing compared to you, and I believe that i'll just never quite reach your skill level. :)

                            • Link

Hehe - I accept the compliment, really ^^ thank you :3

woah, we were online at the same time earlier! :O
it was 10:52 am over here before, how late was it over there?
                                your comment's time says '11:10'

                                but yeah, you deserve compliments.
                                :)

(makes shocked expression) jeez! I forbid myself from anything past 2AM! (I have difficulty getting to sleep)
bet you were tired the next morning, eh? :)
