The first lightsabers, or Protosaber (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Protosaber), were connected to a power pack with a cord, so he's not far off.

Now, THAT'S a lightsabre. WOW! But, who can carry 6 car batteries, an oscilloscope, and a small transformer around with them. However, even the Jedi Knights had to start somewhere. LOL.
