A spooky piece just in time for Halloween! One of my favorite books of all time is "The Fox Woman" by Kij Johnson, which is a story about a fox (Kitsune) who desperately wants to become a woman for the love of a man. The spell to become human requires a human part, so she raids a graveyard at the protest of the ghost of the previous owner of the bones she's stealing.

This piece is loosely based on that scene in the book, all of which continues to inspire me (I've read it and re-read it several times, I highly recommend it), but this part in particular combines two of my favorite things ever: ghosts and kitsune.

I aimed to paint this entirely in just watercolor but when you've done a method for so long, habits are hard to break, and I did use a little bit of colored pencil (mostly around the purple ghost whisps and some minor details here and there), but overall I'm happy I finally finished this concept. I've had several iterations of this idea on my drawing board for going on 4 years now, and thanks to you all, I've finally been able to finish one!
