Character design and style experiment (critique requested)

TheTundraGhost

Personal character designing practise and experimenting with drawing style. I'm personally pretty happy with how he came out, but one of my art teachers didn't like it and told me I shouldn't include this in my portfolio, oh well.

Traditional drawing done with green ballpoint pen, green felt tip pen on sketchbook paper.

I really love the style on this. You clearly have a grasp on body structure, which makes the simplified anatomy work very well here. The incredible details on his clothes and body don't distract because of the simplified form.
The slight touch of asymmetry really adds quite a bit to the overall look and feel of the character. It all comes together in a cohesive way. Great work, fantastic design.

That's a cool sketch! I think there's much "motion" and life with all these character details. I especially love the sword with their dragon-like images on their blades.

Hm, maybe your teacher didn't want you to include this in your portfolio because the standing pose looks.. a little stiff? The left side and the right side look the same, pose-wise, and maybe that doesn't make the piece as outstanding as your other sketches? Compared to your sketch "Mew Three" for example.

I understand you don't need outstanding poses when it's just about a character's design, though! You could make this character design sketch more interesting if you made it a sheet, where you may still use the same pose, but show it from a front-view, back-view, and side-view too?

      Thanks! :)

Well, in the end, he decided to include this in my portfolio anyway. I think his problem was that he personally didn't like the style the character was drawn in, but maybe he thought that others would find it interesting.
