Dragon jouster

themefinland

"Dragon jousters are specialist hunters who hunt large prey, often dragons, but it is not uncommon for them to hunt other large beasts. The most obvious trademark of the dragon jousters is their very striking weaponry. This weapon, known as a dragon lance, is often used to deliver a coup de grace to fallen dragons by stabbing it into a weak spot on the creature, such as the chest or the eyes and then repeatedly firing into it. The weapons design allows the rifle to be fired more than once, making it capable of delivering several lethal blows once it has been anchored into the creature with the spear like bayonet. This weapon can also be fired from a distance by using the foldable foreanchor and securing it into the ground, allowing the dragon jouster to fire several shots before going in for the final strike. However this function is rarely used on dragons, as simple musket fire does little more than annoy them.

Ballista are used to shoot the dragon down from the sky or sometimes roped ballista shots are used to drag the dragon down if the inertia from the ballista bolt is not enough to make it fall. However due to the nature of the ballista and cannons they are sometimes very difficult to aim at a moving target, so other methods must be used to lure the dragon onto the ground, such as by using animal carcasses or broken dragon eggs.

After it is on the ground the dragon jouster begins its "jousting" wherein he will charge at the dragon with their weapon poised for striking. Horses are often used due to the dragon lances unwieldy size, but they are not necessary as a averagely built man can carry and run with the lance and accurately pierce it into their target. Dragon jousters indeed have the most dangerous role as if the dragon spots them their job becomes exponentially more difficult. However Even if they manage to hit a weakspot the creature will most likely become unpredictable which is when the dragon jouster has to be able to hold onto their weapon and be able to fire and reload it in the meanwhile. The spear part of the weapon however is often designed as such that once it penetrates something it is quite securely anchored into the target. Due to the difficulty involved in this role the dragon jousters often get all the glory for the kills as they put themselves into immediate danger once they become involved."
