With short haired dogs, you can start with drawing the smooth sleek coat, and then give it some definition afterwords? If you see the dark fur in the face, I have not painted individual hairs. I do that more on the transitions between colors and some edges.
How about drawing a horse with fluffy coat? Then you have the familiar shape of the horse, and you get to practice a different coat?

Ahh this is simply lovely! I just did my first dog painting, and I'm still trying to figure out how to paint fur. D: I'm so used to the smooth, sleek coat of a horse.
