Background: Both of the Coopers came from emergency personnel backgrounds. Jacqueline was a medic, and Devon was a firefighter. However, one day, there was an explosion at a chemical plant. Devon was so occupied fighting the fires that he failed to notice that his boot's structural integrity had been compromised. When he fell back to the truck, he almost fell over. When a medic was called over, they found that the combination of the heat and the caustic soup he had been working in had left his right foot a steaming, gory mess beyond repair. Devon was rushed to the hospital, with Jacqueline taking care of him on the way.

That was the first time they met. Jacqueline kept finding excuses to meet Devon, and they became fast friends. One year later, they were lovers. And after two years, Jacqueline Hu-Shan officially became Mrs. Jacqueline Cooper.

Both of them realized that they weren't going to be able to support themselves with their old jobs. Jacqueline was stuck on the low end of the totem pole, and Devon had been job-hopping since his amputation. However, they noticed something very convenient. Devon had become something of a beer buff while he was in college, and Jacqueline's father was a professional chef. After pooling their assets, and a loan from a bank, they established their own bar in downtown Colmaton. Now, they are on the border of financial security, and are trying to conceive their first child together.
