This is a preview of a fanart piece drawn of Zig Zag, who belongs to Max Black Rabbit! Big inspiration and love Zig Zag a bunch. One of the earliest fandom characters i was ever familiar with. I've drawn her as part of a mutual friends' comic maaaaaaany years back but never something full, so hopefully i did her justice~

    Now there’s a well-known character I haven’t seen in forever! :)

    • Link

Hehe~ I've been meaning to draw fanart of her for aaaaages (outside of the one comic spot I did) and i'm glad i was able to :3

      • Link

It's nice to see it! :D A lot of my "technically real furry" introductions come from the old Antarctic Press Furrlough and Genus issues I scooped up at local comic shops in 25-cent bins. So, this is a familiar classic character! :)

        • Link

Oh heck~ I never saw those in my small town but yeah, Zig Zag was one of the first classic characters I became familiar with, i think possibly through the Sabrina Online webcomic even.

          • Link

I read the print versions of that webcomic--at least years 1-3, I don't know if they put out any more in print beyond year 3! :D

I got Radio Comix's Furrlough and Genus issues through my various comic shops until my last local shop said it would stop ordering "independent press" stuff..........but after a certain period of time, I feel both comics lost a lot of what made them good. Perhaps the world of online and webcomics changed it, but the art felt like most were not putting in the effort for a comic anymore, Genus really became 90% pin-up illustrations per issue and barely had comics anymore..........or maybe it was harder for RC to court the furry artists becoming more famous online, to get them to submit anything for print? So, I don't really regret not getting newer issues after 2015--heck, I had art published on the letter pages in an issue of Furrlough (though I could DEFINITELY draw those characters way better now!) I think back in 2010? XD I remember the issue also had a gorgeous Diana Harlan-Stein cover, of which I've met her at a few furry 'cons and gotten art from her. :)

That's so awesome!! I never really knew about all the comics until waaaaaaay late. I ended up with some old furry comics from a friend who didn't want them anymore but since they were in the middle of the series of them, it was hard to read because i had no idea what was going on. I would love to get into comics more at some point. Hard to find space when your collection starts getting large though. Tiny apartment woes. Probably one of the reason digital formats are so popular, even just out of necessity for a lot of folks since they can't make more space for more physical items, or they are in places they can't really have that sorta content around without getting into trouble with family.

I love physical books though. One day i'll have the space hopefully.

I've been a comic collector all my life (40+ years! XD) and I admit, I have way too many--and, like you, an apartment way too small for me and all of my books! chuckle I'm looking into storage units now, but just acquired a heavy duty shelving unit for my comics to replace the many plastic tubs they're in now.........each shelf can hold 800lbs and its six shelves, I think they can fit them all, plus my American graphic novels--it consolidates the room a lot. When I got my part-time job at the Library and there were comic shops everywhere in my area........every payday I'd go to each of them and root through 25-cent bins and come home with dozens of comics all the time. I learned about obscure DC super-heroes like Amethyst ("Princess of GemWorld"), Mark Schultz's "Xenozoic Tales" (Cadillacs & Dinosaurs), the Pinis' "ElfQuest" and the very gorgeous-but-I-wonder-if-it-was-ever-finished "Unicorn Isle". I discovered so many independent comics doing this, furry to fantasy! :D

Furrlough used to be known for massive arcing stories, the kind where you'd have to buy it every month to continue the story..........but I suppose things like this have moved online and it's probably much easier to read a whole story this way than in a classic comic book form. I bet a lot of those classic creators of printed works like this have also found ways to archive their old stuff online, Gary Larson resurrected "The Far Side" recently and he's been filling out his website with all of his classic "Far Side" works. It works out for everyone in the end, since more people rely on the internet for many things. :)

Oooooooo that's so awesome! I hope they all fit! I bet that shelving unit is going to look epic once filled! I really want to get into them. Something I'm planning on budgeting for in the near future once finances are a bit more stable. There are so many comics that look really neat that I want to reaaaad!

I used to collect Manga a ton as a teen but that petered out once I started living on my own. The cost was a bit prohibitive once adult responsibilities kicked in. I got rid of most of them for space but I still have some small collection of my favs or obscure stuff that was hard to find. I also started getting comics for Avatar the Last Airbender and some stuff for Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia (among some independant creator comics) in the last couple years but I always want more books @.@

Heck I even have my own zines and anthologies I've run/participated in on my desk shelf and I've been wanting to support other zine and anthologies so much. Never enough money lol. I would spend every last penny on other creators if I had more. XD

                  • Link

I'm hoping to be able to leave the top shelf for some of my slipcased graphic novel sets--I don't have many, but I have a few.........."Xenozoic Tales", the old original Fantagraphics "Usagi Yojiimbo" collections. I'd like to display them out so the artwork on the slipcases is displayed.........I'll need to find some of those little folding things that you can use to display books upright. :)

Yeah, I have a lot of manga, too...........but I'm putting a lot of it in storage. I'm only going to keep out my yaoi manga and my favorite series (One Piece and My Hero Academia) at home. I figure, if I want to re-read my manga, just label the bins that are put in storage. :D OH! Dark Horse Comics is doing superb work with their "Avatar" comics--the hardcover collections of the story-arcs are really nice-looking (though a bit pricey! XD).

I totally understand--whenever I'd go to a furry convention, I'd spend a lot more getting art from artists than getting merchandise most of the time. :D

                    • Link

Oooo~ That sounds awesome! There are a lot of styles of bookends, if that's what you mean. Some very practical ones too that i've seen, are perfect for holding specific collections. You can even alter the width so it can hold a set of something!

Omg yes! I've been eyeing those hardcovers. Unfortunately being in Canada makes everything at least 30% more and the shipping is so much. T_T I've got them on my wishlist and am sitting on them until it's affordable haha. I have some of the singles from before the hardcovers though. I had hoped to complete those sets but it looks like i might be out of luck unless i can find a bookstore that has those still.

It's so true! Though, i get a mix of art and merch. Merch allows them to not have to draw all weekend to make enough sales and i'm a sucker for pins and charms. XD (I would buy more prints if i could actually put up art efficiently in this place.)

                      • Link

Yeah! Working in a Library, I get to see a lot of things that I know I can use to "enhance my collection" of books and comics. The Usagi Yojimbo boxed set I have is two massive volumes in a heavy duty slipcase fully illustrated and later signed by Stan Sakai (a friend got his signature for me at San Diego ComiCon on my slipcase, then mailed it back to me). I'd love to display it properly one day!

Well, one day your dream might come true! I wonder if an Amazon gift card works between Canada and the U.S.? Or, perhaps one day we can do some kind of art-for-item trade when you're not busy with 'cons and commissions--I did that with a friend in a European country (bought them video games here and got art in monetary value of trade). I have pen-pals in Canada, so I don't mind buying something and shipping it to people. :) It's something you can think about for the future.........it might be easier for me to get a hold of them and send them, but if gift cards are acceptable across the world, there's that option too. :)

I admit, I would buy tons of prints, too--it was easier to bring them home with me on an airplane trip! XD

                        • Link

You can buy Amazon gift cards for any Amazon but it has to be the Amazon that the person uses. I can't use USA Amazon.com gift cards but AFAIK you can purchase a CAD Amazon.ca giftcards for someone. I'm not really sure how it works though. I just know it's somehow possible.

Trades are cool too! Definitely something to think about once the postal services are a little more stable. ^_^

Oh gosh yeah, flat items are a god send for suitcases. Bring a flat portfolio case or a couple large flat items to put things inbetween and you are golden!

                          • Link

I thought that was the case with gift cards, but I am definitely up for supporting the postal service. Without the postal service, I wouldn't have made some great friends (via pen-palling) over the years! :D We can definitely talk more at a later point about that kind of trade! :)

I would always try to find a FedEX near whatever conventions I went to in the past. If I was there an entire weekend--I'd ship what I got up through Saturday out to home, then whatever I bought on Sunday (mostly prints and flat stuff to fit in my bags) would come home with me on the plane. :) I did a lot of ATC trading at the furry conventions (in the "resting room/creator's lounge" area), so I always had a multi-purpose binder for cards and smaller prints (8-1/2x11). It was funny, because I'd always use the shipping stuff home as an excuse to get rid of "used clothing" too--I'd use my worn clothing as padding in my packages, for my stuff, then I'd have less clothes to take home, too. XD

                            • Link

For sure! I'm all up for supporting postal services. They need to exist! I may not be from the USA but the USPS delivers a lot of my mail since most of my buyers are from the states. @.@

Oooo i miss ATC's. I still have some blanks but i mostly used them as gifts. Never have the opportunity to really trade them since i think when i got into them, they became more of a small commission thing (ACEO) instead. XD

That is pretty smart! I used my packed clothes to pad fragile purchases in my suitcases all the time. Didn't really think about it for shipping unless I was shipping clothing with something else.

                              • Link

True that! I've been pen-palling for years, so the USPS is definitely my best friend! :)

Yeah, that's how I started off getting art at many conventions--ACEOs. I have cards by artists I've loved from conventions--Kacey, Terrie Smith and Diana Harlan-Stein. At first, it was because it was the only kind of commission most artists would do at 'cons.

It was funny, because one of my packages I sent back once--I sent to my workplace, because it would arrive before I'd actually get home. So, in unpacking it I found out one of my co-workers would do the same thing--if he shipped things home, he'd use worn clothing as padding! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! XD

                                • Link

I can attest that smaller art pieces are much easier at cons haha. I should really break mine out again and do something with the blanks I have. HMMM.

                                  Haha that's amusing XD

                                  • Link

I can remember one of the first years I went to FurCon in CA.........there was a guy (who was apparently famous at the conventions) who wore a trenchcoat covered in ATCs and badges. I know that ATCs and badges were huge draws for commissions for all the years I went to FC (2010-2014). When I went to Anthrocon for the first time in 2015, it didn't seem as popular there or maybe not anymore--people were more about getting full art done, as opposed to the smaller, portable art. I'll admit, that's where I got a full watercolor piece from Diana Harlan-Stein, rather than the cards I always got from her--it was the first year I really had Wabi finalized and was able to do more with my new fursona. So the watercolor I got from her is one of my art treasures. Almost a little disappointing not to be able to get more portable art of him at AC2015, though. chuckle

I still have some blank ATCs in a binder, myself. chuckle

Full art is definitely more of a thing now, for those that can swing it. It's why a lot of folks offer take-home stuff because depending on what you are doing, full character commissions aren't always possible at con.

I personally really enjoy smaller pieces. I offer ACEO styled badges sometimes and they are a lot of fun~

                                      • Link

Yeah, I only had one bad experience for a person who did "take home art" for me--he'd promised to finish it at the convention, then didn't........then took my mailing address and I contacted him several times via his site, then saw him at a few subsequent conventions over the next year and kept asking and he'd just say he was "far behind" (yet kept taking new commissions at conventions)--I hated to do it, but I gave up and I've told everyone I know, don't ever get a commission from this person. It was all I could do, because it was clear he wasn't going to finish my commission and I didn't know enough about doing things online to do anything more about it--just suck up that I'd lost $50. sigh For the most part, at 'con or take home badges/art I had done--I was always happy with them! :D

My happy medium size is like 4x6 for single character non-details........I think because I used to doodle on index cards all the time! chuckle It really is a lot of fun! When I got my anthro-form Wabi badges from Anthrocon.......I told everyone to "have fun" with making an outfit for him and the artists liked the ability to be creative. Wabi's kind of become the "never wear the same outfit twice" at this point........it started as a "running gag", but became part of his personality and biography. XD

Augh that's terrible. I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

Ooo, yeah 4x6 is my average badge size. Not too small, not to big, and just the right amount of details in most cases.

Aw that's cool when artists will make up outfits like that! Seeing each persons interpretation is neat. :)

                                          • Link

I know that it happens--and it sucks.......and likely even reporting them to those places online won't really do much in the end. I remember being on FA and seeing so many journals of people getting commissions and then the artist failing to provide a product. I just feel dumb because this guy kept lying to my face when I'd talk to him at conventions. :/

I think 4x6 is a good badge size, too! You can do halfbodies, which are harder on ATC size badges with any good detail. :D

                                            • Link

There are some places that are meant for those types of reports that serve, at least, as a warning system to other buyers/creators that may need it. Though, if it's been a while since that happened, it is likely they've also forgotten. Either way, you aren't dumb! It's impossible to know exactly how something will go before hand.

Oh yeah! Totally. I generally do busts but occasionally more if the idea warrants it. I have done 1 full body on an ATC before but yeah, detail is a problem. Most of them end up as busts of some kind.

                                              • Link

That's definitely true--and not everyone checks a "buyer beware" site before buying something from someone, either. So, while those are nice to exist, there are some people who would probably like to have a word-of-mouth review of an artist/creator/etc. as well.

Some characters would be all right to get a fullbody onto an ATC, but some characters simply wouldn't fit, that's for sure! XD

                                                • Link

                                                  Totally fair!

                                                  Haha, it's so true.

                                                  • Link

                                                    Yeah! XD
