Iltharr's Song - Sample (critique requested)

So, this is a segment of a large project I've been working on since the start of this year. It's composed of a number of mini-epic poems, telling of great figures and mythological events in a world I'm writing for - much like the Elder Edda.

In terms of style I'm very much interested in northern-european works rather than the epics of Homer. As such, I've been playing around with the styles found in works like Beowulf, among others.

This sample is the beginning of an epic for a warrior called Iltharr, detailing his adventures and how he came to be an important lord during his lifetime. The entire length of his epic is 17,000 words, of which this is only a fraction.

As always I hope you enjoy, and I'm curious to hear what you think.

    Barely between a bear-pup and a seal,
And here it stands all stoic and steel

    I loved these lines!

I'm truly impressed. You've spent a lot of time studying and reading classics, I suspect. This is very finely crafted, though it probably has a somewhat limited audience in this day and age. I don't mean to discourage you, as the work is wonderful. It deserves to be printed in folio size and in the gorgeous style of William Morris' Kelmscott Press. I'd buy it too, if I could afford to.

These days electronic publication is almost the only option for our small audience work, alas. I will be looking forward to seeing more, in whatever form it comes.

Have to say that this made my day when I read your comment! Thanks for reading, and I'm really glad you enjoyed it! There will be more to come, however the details are up in the air. I'll let you know when I put another sample up. =)
