Chain me, cane me, you'll never tame me WIP 3

Teiirka

11" x 14" color pencil with a bit of Micron pen

I've never done a proper wolf so I thought I'd give it a try. Really went all out on her with fun details, definitely more than usual but it doesn't seem to be taking too much longer than normal. Kinda went off half cocked again with the anatomy, my weakest point I think but oh well, I'll try and do better next time. Still a little up in the air on the background. Yeah! Her tail is kinda long. Didn't notice it till to late.

I'll be getting more into shading as I get the BG done.

I've had critique on the sketch about the tail being too low but she has a lot of twist at the waist and the far hip joint is much lower than the front which would make the root of the tail well lower than the high point of the buttocks.
I think I will have her done tomorrow and be on the BG>

Although she is a captive and is trying to be made to be compliant to her captor/owner's will, she is kept in rather luxurious conditions as her captor also shows her off to guests. She is considered an exotic race having been transported great distances from the far North. I picture her captor as a jackal.
She has reserved herself to the fact that she will never see home again and considers herself already dead. She will try and escape if possible but would settle for just getting hold of the b@#$%&d long enough to tear out his larynx...and other body parts if she had the time. :) As always, a short story came to mind with this but I'm not gonna do it this time, too many in the works right now and trying hard to finish the one I'm on now from two pictures back.

As always, critique welcome.

Mother of god, this is truly beautiful.

My only quibble is with the composition. The chain on the wall is distracting. There is already so much going on at the right side of the composition. You need to draw the eye to the left. You did a stellar job on her expression, highlight it.

Thank you! But as for the chain on the wall, remember this is only a WIP and I have almost the entire background to put in. I will try and keep it somewhat out of focus and a lot of the BG will be very dark/shadowy, so the chain will just kind of blend in.

Any suggestions on how to highlight the face? I assume that making the BG behind her head somewhat darker than the rest of her body might work.

As a photographer, I'd move to my right and shoot lower and closer. Not an option for you. The darker OOF background is a good idea. I also had a similar thought as Coyote-Solitarius. Move the wall chain high to the left and let it dangle and loop in font of her.

I'll agree with you here, the chain did distract me, and it took a moment for me to connect what it was I was looking at. I'm sure it will be easier Identified once the background is rendered more, but I'd put something on the left to draw the eye over there to her face.

Lovely work, the fur looks like you could reach out and pet it. I've not yet been able to master that look.

The only issue for me is she seems way to thin, especially in the torso (for a wolf), but that can be a look you want, so, maybe not an issue. Amazing work as always.

You are absolutely right about that and I beat you to the correction by adding a bit more fur along the belly. didn't take much. That was also what caught my eye the most although i still have a few other issues. You seem to always see and confirm what I think may be a problem area. Thanks for the input!

You have immense talent and I am jealous and amazed at what you do. I know I am always needing and wanting a new eye, some input on my work to help me see what I may not. I am just glad I have been able to help you in some way (even if only to confirm what you already knew/suspected).

Usually I will suspect there might be a problem with an area but will quite often do nothing about it unless someone says something. Many, many times, you have made comments that have moved me to make the corrections that have greatly improved a piece. Thank you. As for critiquing others work, I try to refrain from it as I have almost invariably hurt feelings even though compliments were included and the critique mild and constructive.
As for having immense talent, Meh! I'm reasonably good at color and texture but when it comes to anatomy a composition, the meat and potatoes of the thing, I am sorely lacking (thought improving slowly).
You my friend, do have immense talent across the spectrum! Occasionally I will see something in one of your pieces that catches my eye because it seems off in some way, but overall, I don't think I'd have much to help you with in that regard.
Where I do have issue with some of your work is in an area that I feel very strongly should not be brought up, as it is what makes an artist unique. Style, not content, just style. Especially trademark features that make pieces easily recognizable as from a specific artist. And any comment from me about that would be purely subjective.

Very striking piece! Will love to see it finished!

(By the way, I'll do my best to finish the pencil-work for your commission this weekend. I'll keep you posted! :) )

I know on dA I said it was fantastic, and to be clear, I still think it is. I've just noticed one very little thing, though. You know how the two middle toes typically appear to be bigger on wolves? To me, it appears all the toes on her left foot appear to be the same size, even considering how her body is posed, and the angle of the view. Just a tiny, tiny thing only the very picky ones might find a little off.

Other than that, I find it a sound, beautiful piece so far. I'm eager to see the finished result!
