10 x 14 color pencil and a bit of Pitt brush pen
A speed paint for me. (anything less than a week, sketch to finish)
IIiieeee! I'm a pumpkin! Though I signed it Sunday night I've been picking on it till just now. Could pick on it for weeks! Must. Stop. Now!
Critique or suggestions welcome.
Note: Thanks to earlier critique, some anatomy issues have been corrected. Unfortunately after the scan.
This piece sold at the AC art show.
Started out as just a pin-up but evolved into something a little more complex. outlined a short story to go with it. Why can't I ever do things the easy way?
A star-fighter pilot, she has been lost deep underground for months after a high velocity impact drives her ship kilometers into the alien planet...
She nears the surface just before sunrise, the sky is still dark, covered by heavily ladened clouds. She is fatigued, near delirious and basically climbing the ancient volcanic vent on auto pilot when a thunderclap brings her to herself. She realizes she is surrounded by a dim grey light unlike the bioluminescence that had been guiding her way for so long. She now feels the cooler, fresher air ,(There had almost always been a strong air current but it had been warm, damp, unpleasant.) Still not daring to hope she had reached the surface, for she had had her hopes dashed before, she pulls herself up to peer over the edge of the opening. Before her eyes could adjust to the light and distant focal length, the orange sun that had just now crept above the horizon, broke through a gap in the clouds....
Picked up scan Wednesday afternoon and went directly to AC, not even home. Drove all night getting home. So this IS asap.
I Agree to all you mentioned, just was afraid of overdoing it. I envisioned it exactly as you described. If I wasn't rushing to get it done for AC It would have sat for a while and I probably would have darkened things up. Sky was actually brighter on original.
Finally realized what you meant about the hand/wrist. Completely reworked it in the hotel room Thursday night. Rotated it about straight away. thanks much better.
It sold anyway
NO, no photo I was so rushed and tired I forgot to do it. I'm bummed. Might have been able to photoshop in the new hand.
It fetched $175
Gonna be playing with more similar lighting soon and I swear I am going to start trying watercolor pencil. I saw one artists work there that was like no color pencil I'd ever seen. Had to be water color pencil, No trace of grain what so ever. Done perhaps on smooth bristol. Looked almost like prints but weren't. Got his name written down somewhere. Professional illustrator.

Bout time! OK, this is amazing and lovely! My only critiques (since you are trying for more dramatic/diffrent/stronger lighting) is that you could have done much darker, all black areas and that your light sorces could have been brighter! The glow balls she has could have pure white at the center or even be mostly white and that would have made them look more like the light sorce. Right now they are still a bit to mutted to me. The sky is very nice...you could have maybe done a very bright area (yellow white) in the left hand part to make it even stronger, but it works ok a if I think. Great pose and idea!
