One of the many forgotten products of a joint US/Japanese cyberwarfare program (KARSTEN VALLEY) initiated in the wake of the 1993 Sakuragaoka incidents. There were a series of operations using the weapons and creatures developed by this program, most famously the prevention of the Odaiba and San Jose Incursions in the late 1990s. This program was shut down in October 2001 due to shifting threat priorities in the US and a preference for technology that wasn't something out of "some cheesy kid's show." The archival discs were thought destroyed, but were accidentally auctioned off in the early 2010s. One DVD-RAM made its way to a forensic engineer in the Cleveland area via a retrocomputing gift exchange...

Gauss and his new host didn't exactly hit it off that well, although they did get a bit of petty revenge on a former employer (and managed to knock out power to an entire city by accident. Oops.) The duo only managed a successful exit due to the host's tethered smartphone and desktop UPS. They have yet to partake in any more offensive operations, Gauss is worried about exposure and the host is worried about accidentally hurting someone. The cryptocurrency crisis does offer a guilt-free target, however, and a wide variety of native electronic life has proliferated alongside online systems...

The markings scheme may be obsoleted soon, I ordered the Denkou Choujin Gridman artbook from Japan last week and it might result in an aesthetic upgrade. Especially for the landscapes, if I can combine the higher-quality screen grabs from the Shout Factory transfer and scans, I should be able to develop a landscape that covers changes in the infosphere.
