One of the coolest parts of working taxidermy is the educational value.
Honestly, who gets to touch otter feet every day? It's also really neat to
share these aspects of my hobby, and I often take my soft mounts out in
public. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who find it intriguing
and I love to teach them facts about the animals they're touching.
Here's a fun fact as a undergraduate biology major. The webbing between
your feet and fingers before you're born helps determine the next digit
in a 5-1 pattern (5 being your pinky.) In animals like otters and ducks, a
protein called Gremlin accumulates in the webbing to prevent apoptosis
(cell death) between the webbing.
