The Curse of the Poultrygeist! (critique requested)

SquareZer0

Something invisible has been attacking stands at the county fair that are owned by shapeshifters. Folks have been murmuring about the return of something called "The Poultrygeist," a local urban legend. Some members of the shapeshifter community balk it off as some poor were-avian who got seen once, but the local color insists it's the spirit of every turkey ever killed for Thanksgiving, come to wreak revenge. The legend of the Curse of the Poultrygeist has been a Chambury favorite for generations, told around Thanksgiving tables every year, but this year, the odd happenings at the county fair have hushed exaggerated retellings, replacing happy anecdotes with fear and superstition.

Ever since Zeke was nearly killed at The Trial in summer of 2014, he's been able to "go places" while he sleeps. He chalked this up to strange dreams until he began to realize he could still do it while he was awake. He found he could leave his body and move around, essentially astral-projecting himself through a limited space around where he left his physical body. The odd part was the weird, otherworldy space he found himself in, where everything was there, but didn't feel quite real. He could still touch things, but his body was only half-formed, and everything moved like it was suspended in waist-high water. Also, he could see things, entities that were like him, but no one else could see.

Given his ability to walk in-between realities, he thought he could look into the invisible terror plaguing the town. When he saw what was waiting for him on the other side though, he began to regret his decision to come alone...

This was my entry for Silver and Bone's November art challenge. The prompt was to come up with an illustration, or a short story based on the title "The Curse of the Poultrygeist!" I don't think I've busted my ass this hard on a piece in a very long time. I had a blast!
