They are used to dig down into the underground circuits and repair them safely; but that is only their main purpose some specialized ones are used for combat or general exploration.

The pilot is suspended in a gel like substance with a visor that gives a ‘robot point of view’. The suit is controlled by a combination of motion from the pilot and brain waves.
