Anik Experiment Sketches

A big bunch of drawings of Anik, the banded seasnake Maranaga... ^^ He has a cute snoob nose...

I often wonder what my naga would look like as ordinary snakes... or as purely humanoid creatures. And here I've even portrayed Anik as he'd be were he a traditional naga of Hindu mythology... the half-snake, half-human taur-like form was not the original form. It was usually either a great serpent, usually cobra-like, with obviously supernatural features. They were also depicted sometimes as purely humanoid, surrounded by a crown of cobras to hint at their true nature. The "snake-with-human-features" or a snake with a humanoid head form came next, but rarely and usually only in stories where the naga was an antagonist. And finally, when Western influence came in, the human-torso'd and snake bodied version became a popular representation... this was more than likely informed by Western mythological figures, such as the Lamia, Echidna, or the Gorgons. One of the reasons I made my Maranaga species extremely snakelike was to allude more to the Hindu ones and their general "divine", or at least powerful but not typically "evil" nature... But arms are useful, so it's a mix.

Also--CHEEB! XD Anik looks super-handsome as a normal seasnake. ^^
