2014 Summary of Art

Sparkyopteryx

Looks like it's that time of year again folks! Time for a retrospective run-down of what I succeeded and failed spectacularly at. I noticed this is the first year I've actually posted one of these to Weasyl (back then I was more exclusive with what I posted here, but now it looks like anything can come through that quality control checkpoint now!). Interestingly, I remember this meme off and on throughout the year as a reminder that "you need a stepping stone for each month, even if it's 100+ dragon sketches or worldbuilding faff." So without further ado...

January: I didn't do anything terribly fancy that month, since most of them were character studies and sketches. I was taking my practice with ballpoints very seriously though so I did create that little gem you see there. Also motivated me to try to take on ballpoint illustration commissions soon afterward.
February: I remember this month very well. Not fondly mind you. I was going through an extreme emotional and motivational slump, you know the standard annual "My work and myself will never amount to anything" sort of deal. Best I could produce was the start of a reference sheet, some slight progress on that big project, some more studies and that strange, surreal pastel piece experiment "Lightwalk." I'll never get oil pastels.
March: Things were looking up this month. Finished that awesome ballpoint commission in the middle and did some smaller stuff along with it. On the personal side there was a lot of positive influence such as the start of a new Pathfinder game.
April: Produced lots of stuff this month, mostly things in pen but some other things as well. Since March I was also picking at that project and I was working on it a lot this month as well. Since the project was already taking a lot of focus to begin with, I didn't want to tackle anything too fancy or involved.
May: Was doing a lot more pencil stuff by this month, along with a continued glut of Art Noveau-themed stuff that culminated in that beast of a picture, "Stone & Flora." Great achievements in May were made regarding my graphite skills.
June: Started to kick my worldbuilding into high gear and started drawing up sheets that featured the various races and peoples of Alteir (I've actually had five of them finished since August, but I have not uploaded them anywhere yet!). Was busy prepping for my Alaska trip so I didn't do anything too fancy, but those racial sheets were plenty of work and experience gained nonetheless.
July: Starting at the very beginning of this month was the colored pencil piece you see there. It was a piece done on a whim but I ended up learning a few good techniques. In the summer I generally do not produce much since I hate the season and heat and I generally cannot work well in a darkened house in the middle of the day. Then the Alaska trip happened and I came back refreshed and made a few more good pictures and concept pages.
August: Lots more worldbuilding this month! Mostly concepts and the start of other stuff that gets finished later on, but I was generally feeling pretty good. Productive and the inevitable ending of miserable summer (we had a nice, mild August for Nevada).
September: Still more personal art and development; trying to push my techniques further and further, along with more stuff like illustrative scenes and general character interaction. Was less interested in concepts by now and more with art that had things like backgrounds or setting.
October: The month of exhausting progress! I participated fully in Inktober and got all 31 days done. I learned so much and produced so many nice pieces it was unreal. A benchmark month.
November The month of stress. Since Inktober shot down all free time that I was going to devote to another large project, I had to scramble for this entire month to get it done by the 26th but I succeeded with two days to spare and no loss of quality with my "Aetherium" piece. 2014 was the first ever year where it was bracketed with two major projects, a trend I'd like to keep going.
December: Less hectic, less ambitious than previous months. Save for a couple of personal stuff I've been picking at, this entire month is devoted to paid work! Refreshing, since up until then 2014 was horribly unproductive as far as commissions go. Still, got some solid pieces to round out the end of the year, especially the one featured here.

And I'm still drawing, so this is far from the last submission for 2014. Things I'm going to work on in 2015:
~More atmospheric pieces.
~Scenery and backgrounds.
~Illustrative pieces.
~Lighting, perspective and especially composition.
~Different media (hopefully).
~Refinement of technique with familiar media.
