Inktober #28: Yale portrait study by Sparkyopteryx

Inktober #28: Yale portrait study

Sparkyopteryx

A long while back, earlier this year I remember a brief discussion on dA with Swandog about unusual and underrepresented mythical beasts, since during the Medieval period when illuminated bestiaries were at their height every scholar, artist or philosopher were creating creature mash-ups left and right. One of my favorites has always been the Yale, a deer or unicorn-like creature with a very unusual sort of horn arrangement with one facing forward and one facing back. This guy was heavily inspired by one of my favorite cervines, an African antelope called a nyala.

This is literally the first time I've ever truly been satisfied with my brushpen work. It was pretty quick but all of that long hair was perfectly suited for such a medium.

I think it's delightful, which is saying a lot since I don't usually like this particular line as much as other types of creatures. I didn't even know what a Yale was until you told me!
