"Stone & Flora" WiPs 1-2 by Sparkyopteryx

"Stone & Flora" WiPs 1-2

Sparkyopteryx

I know it took me forever to get these progress shots posted; it always seems I post WiPs a good week or so behind the actual work half the time. I'm actually a bit further along on this piece than these would suggest (the sketch on the left I had scanned weeks ago. Yikes). Working on this is like walking through a morass, but I'm picking at it in increments.

Yeah, I'm working...it's just very slow right now. I wouldn't call this an art block, it's more akin to swimming through a still and stagnant pool (more water metaphors). It's like I have to disturb its surface just to make it clear again.

Commission work for teiirka Character however belongs to myself.

    Oh boy. :3
    Art Nouveau.

Indeed! definitely one of my favorite sorts of art styles to work in...

I've tried numerous times to do it.

There's actually no one way to do Art Noveau; the look of Mucha has simply crystallized what modern artists (and others) think of when they hear the word because he was such a pivotal figure of that era. It was an art movement that took many forms, with only certain "rules;" the love of organic, sweeping shapes with the "whiplash curve," inspiration from nature, the femme fatale, and the concept of art being brought to everyday objects and advertising. It was freedom from the staid and established. You should read up on the art movement itself, and perhaps something about it will grab you so you can create it and make it your own!

It's been a real treat to watch this come along, the picture is absolutely gorgeous already. I can't wait to see it finished!

This looks ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT so far. Can't wait to see the finished painting! (I can still call it a painting, right..?)

Or I could have said finished illustration, but yanno...

Nonsense, I paint with graphite. I practically bleed the stuff these days, after all.

Absolutely beautiful, I have no other words.

OMG! Throw a brick at me or something to get my attention when you post something like this! Weasyl and I don't get along when it comes to notifications of new art by people I watch! Hate their thumbnail system and just about everything else about their browsing system.
Anyway, THIS IS FREAKING GORGEOUS! And you know I don't mind the wait. Just the bit of finished bit of graphite work you've done so far has me literally shaking my head in wonder! Thank you so much for the time and thought you're putting into this and I hope it isn't this piece that is keeping you from doing other wonderful arts in the interim. This will be matted, framed and hung as soon as I get it! <3

Oh wow, really? Well in that case, I'll certainly make sure to give a heads-up whenever I post more progress shots for this one or any future commissions!

I'm happy to hear you love how it's turning out so far; as fun as it is, its been one of those pieces where it's impossible for me to work on nonstop, so it has definitely been a gradual process. Not to mention graphite is a medium that takes so many hours to begin with! Quite a trip though, and I'm definitely getting a print of this for myself and will be doing the same.
