Gotreus design progression

Sparkyopteryx

Concept stuff I did late last year that I figured on uploading here finally. The deal was that I would design my partner a Hallowe'en-based character for him. He gave me a few rough guidelines and let me run with the rest of it; one of those guidelines was something serpent-like. I recall a long time ago him wanted to make a hydra character so I got the brilliant idea of using that as a springboard. Thus the planar-traveling spirit hydra Gotreus was born.

The markings on the far left were scrapped fairly quickly, however the shape of the head (heavily inspired by pit viper heads) remained. The middle image depicts him with the yellow designs accentuated; these markings are what I decided on in the end. Wherever it's not yellow is an iridescent near-black shade of violet (the violet you see on the left isn't nearly dark enough). The middle image also shows him with his hood down. The far right images show how the yellow markings look on his belly scutes; this pattern remains until the tail. The tongue is flat and barbed; he uses this tongue to "sniff out" concentrated pathways of magical energy, or Ley Lines. The last illustration shows his general body proportions.

A lot of people would ask why he has one head as a hydra and the answer is simple: he only sprouts another one if the single is cut off. And the other heads are temporary; they dissipate after 24 hours. And in this serpentine-humanoid form he can only ever have three heads. They only traditionally multiply when he's a true hydra (concept sketch of that coming up). He can also regrow all of his limbs instantly, so don't think that would be a viable strategy either.

Art and initial character concept are mine, the character himself belongs to MisterMidnight

You did a good job making a creature that took my idea of Mysticism and made it physical, I love him and can't wait to work on him more.
