It's kind of amazing you made it pop out, despite the uniform paper texture it's easy to tell what's in the foreground and what's the fishy sky. My impression it was an image of a living room was quickly corrected. c_c

  I love the animation cell aesthetic, so I'm emulating it more. Trying to figure out how to add texture without flattening the piece too much, but I haven't found much help yet.

    I'd think you would be able to save an image as a PNG (which this is) while retaining layer information by default pngs have a meta-tag for layer information; but if you tick a box (Depending on the Software) for Web Optimization it removes the excess tags which flattens it together.
