Exciting Still Life I

slugbones

I wanted to spend longer on this than I did, as is I'd say I put less than an hour into it, I don't remember how long exactly. Unfortunately I had to take it down after the first session because I was scared the dog was going to pull the curtain which would push the gasmask which would knock over the bamboo vase... all Rube Goldberg style, you see.

Anyway, kinda sad because I like where it was going, but I don't think I could set it up quite the same way.

The really warm light is from one of those Himalayan pink salt lamps. It doesn't get very bright, so I got a lot of pretty-close-to-black areas in the curtain and elsewhere.

It's fun really studying simple setups like this - at some point I realized the reflection in the vase was a rather complex reflection of the salt lamp in the eyepiece of the gasmask and thought that was interesting, though the angle I have on the lens here needs to be corrected to show more accurately where the light was going. It's also fun picking up on all the different colors of shadows going on, especially the green on the gasmask from the green canister.

I will set up a less precarious still life next time. And one that's less red, holy crap! I have some banana peppers that would appreciate being drawn, as well as a really tiny oil lamp.

Critique is still welcome, as always.

You've done a wonderful job, especially seeing how you spent less than an hour on it! I really like the lighting in particular! And the reflection of the green on the gas mask: I myself have problems incorporating a colour which is foreign to the subject but required when shading it, but you've conveyed it really well! I do agree on the red; much as it is striking and that it draws my eyes, it might be just a little too intense, but looking at this piece as a whole, I really like what you've done! Great work!
