Silrathus was born a demon of thunder and fire, and later traded away her thunder magic in exchange for increased powers of fire. In the process, she acquired her stylish red markings. She was lucky that was the only side-effect - magical re-alignment is a dangerous process and can result in death or disfigurement.

Thank you! I think I'm using references a bit more instead of just thinking 'yeah, it probably bends that way'. I think it also helps that my new bedroom (we moved house last month) has a wall that's about 60% floor-to-ceiling mirror. It's super easy for me to looks up and use myself as a reference to check how hands or whatever will look from a certain angle. My old bedroom had no mirrors at all so I'd have to go into the bathroom, which only had little mirrors, or the hall, which had a big mirror but was too public to stand there doing silly poses.

That's a really good idea. I've heard there are websites that generate poses for you as well, I'll have to give those a look next time I'm drawing something tricky!
