Viva la Vida, Dog by SiriusDF

Viva la Vida, Dog

Not every dog comes in quietly. Eight years ago, like a wicked super-cell storm, she blew in with tornado fury, wreathed in a lightning crown of growls and snarls. Touching down at a Pet Store hosting shelter dogs, she charged her cage at every movement, growls shattering eardrums.

The sign: Up for Adoption. Friendly! had people shaking their heads, couldn't believe who would ever want this dog. A spare blue-heeler cattle dog from a ranch, given over to a stock broker who went out of his way to put PTSD nightmares into her and dumping her at a shelter like yesterday's trading futures.

She was no shrinking violet in personality, but fiercely dominant in nature, a cattle dog who had no patience for human BS in any form.

The female staff at a dog day kennel hosted her and managed to get her calmed down and accepting...just. Still prone to snapping at those who moved their hands too fast near her head. She took to a Lead and was at her best on walks. With feet of sand, the friend at the Dog care 'volunteered' me to walk her. She didn't trust males in general, so we just walked and walked and walked through quiet meadows. No attempts at Nice doggy, good doggy petting, just a business hike. Like two casual co-workers strolling on lunch break.

An acquaintance got dragooned into adopting her. As part of the package, I was her only trusted dog walker. A few days later, when I sat down on her new door stoop after a long haul walk, I found a muzzle nosing my lap, resting her pointy eared head upon it while stroking her ears. Canine face gazing up calmly and for once, quiet eyes saying. I like you. But I got issues. Are you up to the task?

A long road, but her owner and only dog walker steered her into becoming a rather decent dog. Politely aloof in public. Never a fetch, nor toy for her. Habitual, marathon walks were her joy. She was sneaky and stubborn at times, but genuinely affectionate to a select few.

For the truth is, that I'll miss you.

May this dog rest in peace.
