On February 7, 1940, Walt Disney's Pinocchio debuts in theaters in New York City. The story of a puppet who works to become a real boy after being magically brought to life, Pinocchio was the second of Disney's animated featured films with the first being Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Despite the stunning success of [i]Snow White[/i] and the positive critical reception Pinocchio received, the film suffered a loss of over $1 million in its original run due in large part to the loss of European and Asian markets due to the outbreak of World War II. However, later reissues of the film to theaters more than made up for the initial losses with Pinocchio earning over $145 million dollars at the box office between 1940 and 1984. The film was also the first animated film to earn an Academy Award when it won the Academy Award for Best Original Score as well as the Academy Award for Best Original Song with "When You Wish Upon a Star." Today, Pinocchio is considered to be among the greatest animated films ever produced and is among the films on the National Film Registry considered to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films" worthy of preservation.
